Our Story

How it all started...

Lafayette Church of the Nazarene was a God-given vision in the heart and mind of Reverend C. E. McCracken while pastoring a home mission church in Memphis, TN. In a few short months, the Kentucky District Superintendent, Dr. L. T. Wells, called the McCracken family (Reverend C. E. & Naomi and their three sons: David, Edward, & Gary) to Lexington and provided a tent for an Evangelistic Crusade in South Lexington at the end of Southland Drive. At the conclusion of the meeting, on July 18, 1954, the church was organized with a charter of 50 members.
With no property or building, the new church began its worship under the tent. Other arrangements were sought out, and God provided a place of worship at the Naval Reserve Center on Spring Hill Drive.
God was at work and the church grew. The current location of Lafayette Church of the Nazarene was made available by God's grace and giving people. A basement sanctuary was quickly built and the congregation began to worship there in August of 1955. In July 1962, the new ‘upstairs’ sanctuary was completed and dedicated to the Lord; we currently worship here today.

Participating in God's Mission...

Lafayette has a heart for God’s mission in the world. Lafayette believes that God’s mission provides life to the body, mind, and soul. Therefore, Lafayette has been intimately involved in providing safe drinking water, building schools and kitchens, and providing means of sharing the Gospel. Additionally, with such a heart, Lafayette has helped raise up local congregations.

Where we are headed...

In the next few years, our church envisions a vibrant and growing community where we extend our reach beyond our walls, touching lives around us.  Our goal is to inspire and connect more hearts with Jesus, building a supportive community of faith that fosters spiritual growth and transforms lives. Together, we will embrace new opportunities and empower others to experience the love and grace of our Savior.
